Assignment Task:

Before you start:
You may want to read about writing a history essay. Two books which are useful and are on reserve in the library:
• Jules Benjamin, A Student's Guide to History, 8th ed. (New York: Bedford/St. Martin's, 2001).
• A student's Guide has good chapters on researching and writing a history term paper. In particular, reading chapters four and five will help you save many hours in the library.
• Kate Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, 6th ed. (Chicago: UCP, 1996).
• A Manual for Writers is an essential book for students which explains all you need to know about the proper format for essays. It explains everything from the proper capitalization of words to the proper format for notes and bibliographies. It also has a long section of sample endnote/footnote and bibliography entries in chapter 11.
Steps you may want to follow:
1. Choose your topic.
2. Read enough to establish your main theme or thesis, and evidence. Make sure you record all the necessary details from your books and articles — page numbers and publication details — to enable you to make proper notes and a bibliography for your essay.
3. Develop an outline and organize your notes according to the points you plan to make in your essay to defend your thesis. Writing your notes on index cards is an effective way to do this.
4. Writing the Essay:

a. Introduction  Your introduction should outline the historical problem you are going to address within your essay and state your thesis about the problem. It should also provide the reader with a sense of the major points you will use to defend your thesis.
b. Body of the Essay  The body of your essay should develop the defense of your thesis in a clear and logical way. Paragraphs should develop the major points of your argument beginning with a strong topic sentence which states clearly the paragraph's subject. The evidence developed in each paragraph should relate directly to its topic sentence.
c. Conclusion  The conclusion should briefly summarize your thesis and evidence. It might then evaluate the importance of your findings. For example, if you are writing a biography of the Canadian feminist Nellie McClung, you might want to discuss why it is important to write about the early activities for women's rights in Canada. As part of this, your conclusion might also discuss what has changed or failed to change as a result of the events described in your essay. Finally, your conclusion might Sc jo? r.tisi any new tensions or questions which have emerged as a result of your research.
