Highlights
On June 2019, an anonymous list titled “University of Azania Rapists” was posted on an anonymous page on Facebook. The list, of eleven men’s names and the words “et al” who attended and currently attend the University of Azania was titled “Reference List”. The list quickly went viral and produced a media frenzy both on campus and nationally. After the publishing of the list an anonymous post from a former student of the University was published claiming that in the year 2000, a staff member of her faculty had made sexual advances at her and when she reported these to the “sexual offences officer” (SOO) – the Deputy Dean – she had encountered challenges. She said that the SOO had only contacted 3 months after her initial reporting. Further she said that the SOO had asked her invasive and intrusive questions i.e did you perhaps lead him on, what were you wearing, are you sure you didn’t misinterpret his words?
The Facebook post quickly went viral and former and current students of the University commented on the post with #Metoo. Later in that week an open letter from “85 concerned staff members” called for the University to take the matter seriously and begin the process of ensuring that the University takes sexual assault by staff members and students seriously.
Despite repeated allegations by former and current students of a lack of institutional action on sexual offences, the University never took action against the men implicated in the “Reference List”. One of the men in the “Reference List” not only denied the allegations against him but said that anyone who continues to speak about the list will be sued for defamation of character. One of the men committed suicide and left a note admitting to having participated in ritual hazing of his digs house which included a
competition to get as many drunk girls to come with them to their dorms in order to have sex with them.
With reference to the Mukkaddam, Nkala cases and SLAPP and the main theme of the semester write a memorandum in which you advise the more than 80 students who have identified themselves as victims of sexual assault on the campus about options available to them.
