Purpose 
This assignment focuses on a critical assessment and evaluation of a key idea or theme in urban design/urban form, applied to a specific site. The purpose is to develop a strong understanding of key scholarly writings in urban design and to apply them to empirical examples.

Instructions 
A successful essay must show a strong grasp of scholarly ideas and writings but may also include illustrative empirical material or examples. The course reading list and the resources in individual modules can be drawn upon, but these are not exhaustive. As a guide. you should make core reference to around five academic journal papers. book chapters or books. You should focus on a deep engagement with approoriate sources. unpacking key ideas in detail, rather than a superficial 'skim' through a number of different sources. You may then cite a further five to ten other academic references to develop the argument and show your breadth of knowledge of the topic. 
In terms of geographical scope. you can locus on Australian cities or use international examples. You might integrate some insights from Designing with Country where relevant, but this is not a requirement. 

You should also integrate images within your essay. These should be sourced and captioned. and should be used as reference to emphasise points in your essay. As a guide. 5 images would be sufficient. Captions are included in the word count. 

It is important to note that you do not need to focus on one course module in undertaking the assignment, and you are encouraged to make connec lions between the themes of the different modules. However, be careful not to replicate work that you have undertaken for other courses for your degree, or for previous degrees, to avoid academic misconduct. 

Choose ONE of the following topics. You should use this as a basis to give your paper a title which reflects the exact focus of your essay. For example. it you choose number 2. and you had a particular geographical or topic focus. your title could be: *Urban design and the railway station: crowds. mobilities. and the American city". Or, for number 1. it could be something like: "Applying Jan Gehl's concept of 'life between buildings to a high-rise office district'. But the essay doesn't have to be this specific, as long as it is well researched and carefully written. 

1. Explain the techniques by which urban designers can integrate 'fine grain design with dense and/or tall development projects.

2. Examine the responses of urban designers to infrastructure planning such as transport corridors and terminals, stations and interchanges.

3. Explain the relationship between urban design and climate change adaptation strategies.

4. Discuss the relationship between urban design and place management, paying attention to debates about the public•private in urban space.

5. Evaluate the techniques that can be used by urban designers to understand how public spaces are used.

6. Discuss the scope and limitations of urban designers to engage with interior space. and how it relates to exterior space. drawing on examples such as shopping malls. megastructures. and underground spaces.

7. Identify the key issues. and potential controversies. that urban designers have to consider when engaging with a public art project.
