Assignment Task:

Task

Assignment 1

This assignment is to be written as one cohesive paper, written to publishable quality in full academic style.

Read and examine the Kingston Demographics, the interviews conducted by Sarah and the newspaper articles as well as the Data (SPSS) files. Using this data as if it were your own (see presentation below) and supporting your claims with at least one reference from an appropriate source other than unit material.

• Describe a possible hypothesis and research question(s) that might be drawn from this data.

• Describe the research method used and describe two possible ways to improve the research design

• Examine the questionnaire used and determine the reliability and validity of this instrument.

• Conduct a paired samples T-Test, on the pre and post mean scores. Can the null hypothesis be rejected and why?

• Undertaking descriptive statistics analysis on using Sarah’s overall data matrix for the whole study – NOT her Trial matrix. What conclusions may be drawn from the data that support your hypothesis and research question(s)

Assignment 2

Martin believes that one of the strong themes to emerge from his early interviews with the mothers is that they feel that the closure will lead to a loss of a sense of community. Read the transcript of Martin’s interview with Janice. Code the transcript and identify two-three key concepts emerging from your coding. What evidence can you find from that interview that supports Martin’s conclusion? Should he consider an alternative theme? If so, what would you suggest? Justify your response with reference to the Kingston Data, the Reading Guide, and the Planning and Conducting Interview Chapter from your text.

The issue you are investigating is the mothers’ perspective on the impact of closing a rural school. Has the school closure decision and action had an impact on the community living in and around Kingston, and if so, what is the nature of this impact?

The two appendices will include:

A. A conceptual model of how mothers feel about the closure. The model is informed by your analysis of Martin’s data.

B. An appendix of your choice. Below are some suggestions, but these are not exhaustive.

• A content analysis of newspaper articles

• A timeline of the key events surrounding the closure decision and subsequent school changes. This could be linked to the different data collection points and used to explain the degree of impact.
