Highlights
Purpose:
The focus of the Investigation Report is physical activity, with an emphasis on sport and sociological related issues. The primary intent of this project is for students to investigate and critically examine a social issue associated with physical activity generally or sport specifically.
Assignment Focus:
The Investigation Report provides an opportunity for students to practice interviewing individuals in the field of sport or physical activity, making connections between their responses to sociological literatures. The student will select a sociological topic, search for peer-reviewed academic articles on the topic and develop a research question. Students will then interview relevant individuals to answer the research question and submit a written report. The paper will make connections between the interviewee’s responses and peer-reviewed academic literature.
Specific Assignment Directions:
Part I: Investigation Report Preparation (10%)
To assist in preparation of the assignment, class time will be dedicated for selection of a relevant topic; creation of an action plan/time line; literature search, formulation of the research question and interview questions.
1. Investigate potential sport-related social issues. Review the textbook or relevant sources to begin choosing a topic for your investigation. Each student will be responsible for selecting at least 2 peer-reviewed articles on the topic, conducting 1 interview or conducting a survey with at least 25 individuals.
2. Topics should have a sociological focus. Review course readings, lectures and sociological related articles for potential topic ideas. Ensure there is scholarly literature on the topic and that the literature is sociological. Examples of potential topics include:
• organized youth sports (informal youth games and/or organized sports);
• deviance in sport (violence, hazing, eating disorders, gambling, drug use);
• participation in sport and physical activity by people with diverse abilities (physical, cognitive, behavioral, sensory);
• sport and issues related to gender, race and ethnicity, social class, economy, politics, media, religion, and/or aging; and
• varsity sports and / or intramurals in high school or college / university. Once your topic has been selected, confirm your topic with the instructor.
3. Develop an Action Plan (Time Line): Use the Action Plan / Time Line to determine what tasks are required to complete the report, how and completion dates. The following is a list of questions for consideration:
• When, where and how often will you set aside time to work on the project?
• What journal articles will be selected?
KINS 1161 Investigation Report Fall 2019
• 1 interview or 1 survey with 25 subjects be implemented?
• When will the questions be formulated and interviews / survey occur? When will you word process the questions and responses by?
• When will you begin to prepare and write your report?
• What is your date of completion?
• Other considerations and / or pertinent tasks? Students are not expected to include this action plan in their Part I submission, it is for their own reference purposes only. It is highly recommended that all students create some type of plan as the report is composed of various parts.
4. Article Search: Following selection of your topic, choose and examine two (2) peer-reviewed articles. Additional relevant sources, such as books, newspaper and magazine articles, and videos, may also be used in your investigation and cited, using APA style, in the References. Students can change the peer-reviewed sources they use for the Final paper – this stage is simply for the instructor to ensure students are on the right track (i.e. choosing peer-reviewed sources, choosing sources relevant to their topic).
5. Read, review and summarize: The summary of each article should include the following
information:
• Identify the central argument of the article.
• Identify 2 – 3 key points that are relevant to your topic.
• Each of your peer-reviewed articles, plus any additional sources, must be referenced using APA Style.
6. Formulate research question: Based on review of your resources and article summaries, develop your research question. This question will be identified in your introduction of your report. In the body of your paper you will develop and substantiate a response to your question based on interview and/or survey responses, making connections to literature. Note: there will be a workshop on October 22nd to help students formulate their research question.
7. Formulate interview questions (and those for survey / observation, if included):
• Students can interview whoever they choose to, as long as the individual’s position and responses help them to answer their research question. Students cannot interview their instructor for this course or other sections of KINS 1160.
• Whoever students list as potential interviewees is not definite. This means that students are not tied to who they mention as potential interviewees – they are free to change them after submission of Part I pending any changes.
• What questions will be asked? o Students are expected to formulate 7-10 interview questions per interview. Questions can be the same for each interview or different, depending on student preference. o Ensure format is consistent and questions are appropriate for and relevant to the investigation.
