in the unit. Each student will be required to complete the exercise and prepare a written report that displays their level of research understanding and competence in
qualitative data analysis and interpretation.

In this assignment, we will be conducting:
An investigation of the efficiency of the introduction of the Medical Assessment and Planning Unit (MAPU) at three Tasmanian Hospitals
Hospitals in Tasmania and around the world face a common problems:
1. How to prioritize patients who arrive at emergency departments most efficiently to ensure the most severe cases get treated first and
2. Minimize the waiting time of all patients.
The Medical Assessment and Planning Unit (MAPU) is one initiative which aims to do just that. MAPU acts as a gateway between a patient’s general practitioner (GP), the
emergency department and the hospital wards. It alleviates the pressure on emergency departments by enabling a healthy turnaround for patients.
Patients arriving in emergency departments are generally categorized according to their severity. Category 1 being the most severe and Category 3 being the least
severe.
You have been presented with data recording the daily average waiting time of patients in each Category (1,2,3) across three hospitals in and around Hobart (Royal
Hobart Hospital, Calvary St John and Calvary Lenah Valley) for the period 1 January 2019 to 31 December 2020. Starting from 1 January 2020, Royal Hobart Hospital and
Calvary Lenah implemented MAPU to reduce daily average waiting times of patients at emergency departments. Calvary St John did not implement MAPU. Prior to 1
January 2020, neither hospital had implemented any measures for reducing average waiting times for patients.
