1. If necessary, rework the issue you analysed in Part A. The issue statement in this section should be THE SAME ISSUE you presented in your Part A submission. You should consider the marker's feedback and make any adjustments necessary, for example to clarify your arguments or provide better examples from the case. Attach your ORIGINAL Part A submission as the first Appendix of your assignment, for comparison by your marker.
2. Identify ONE (1) ADDITIONAL issue clearly related to ONE of the following topics: Planning (Topic 5); Leadership (Topic 6); Sustainability (Topic 7); Organising (Topic 8). To identify an issue, it is recommended that you refer to:
a. The seminar and tutorial materials and online resources on Topics 5-8.
b. Pages 22 to 25(Note 4) of The Guidebook, which provides guidance on identifying issues.
c. The guidance on ‘What is an Issue’ in the Additional Resources section of this document.
d. The academic sources provided.
3. Write an Issue Statement based on this ADDITIONAL issue (i.e. different from the Issue identified in Part A). A well-written Issue Statement should consist of an introductory 1-2 sentences, succinctly describing one of the challenges or dilemmas faced by Jennifer Brown, using the language relevant to Topics 5-8.
4. Write an analysis of the ADDITIONAL issue. You should conduct an analysis of your chosen issue by:
a. Identifying and presenting the relevant facts of the case (1 paragraph). State how these case facts support the issue you chose. You may choose to do this by using one of the tools for case analysis described in Note 7 of the Student Guide (specifically, you may choose from tools 8 to 18).
b. Linking case facts to management theory covered in the course, and writing using management language (1-2 paragraphs). You should consider your chosen issue in light of the evidence provided in AT LEAST TWO of the academic sources provided, and in light of any analysis conducted using tools from Note 7 of the Student Guide. Consider the following questions: What is the underlying cause of the issue? What are the key influencing factors? Why is the case protagonist finding this decision difficult? Using management concepts and analysis tools to help you answer these questions should help you write, justify and analyse your issue.
c. Coming to a conclusion about the state of the issue, and communicating this conclusion using management language (1 paragraph).
5. Write an overall Issue Statement. Consider BOTH the issue you identified in Part A, AND the issue identified in Part B together. Consider the following questions carefully:
a. Does your analysis of both issues point to the same problem? Do they lead to the same conclusion (i.e. hire/don’t hire a CSO)? If yes, then combine both issues in a single, overarching introductory Issue Statement; OR
b. Does your analysis of the issues lead to different and conflicting conclusions (i.e. one issue suggests Brown should hire a CSO; the other suggests Brown should NOT hire a CSO)? If yes, then highlight this dilemma in an overarching introductory Issue Statement.
6. Write a Recommendation. Should Jennifer Brown hire a CSO? Why, or why not? To complete your recommendation, you should:
a. Explain briefly the advantages and disadvantages to Narinex of hiring a CSO. Specifically, what effect will hiring a CSO have on both or either of the issues you identified? (1 paragraph)
b. Explain briefly the advantages and disadvantages to Narinex of NOT hiring a CSO. Specifically, what effect will NOT hiring a CSO have on both or either of the issues you identified? (1 paragraph)
c. Make a choice. Recommend it. Should Narinex hire a CSO? Justify or explain the choice using evidence from the academic sources provided, case facts, and your newly acquired knowledge of management theory (1-2 paragraphs). Remember to use management language in your writing. Make sure your arguments and evidence presented are consistent and flow
logically from those presented in the previous paragraphs where you consider the alternatives (hire a CSO / don’t hire a CSO). You are not allowed to use any additional sources, except the ones provided!
7. Write an Executive Summary. An executive summary should be a brief section at the beginning of your report (max. 150 words) that summarises the issues and solutions offered in the report. By reading an executive summary, your audience should get the essence of the report. In particular, executive summaries are written to encourage and direct executive decision-makers to take action, even if they never read the rest of the report. Make sure your executive summary can stand on its own, without reference to the other parts of the report.
8. Compile your reference list. List all the sources used in the report in alphabetical order, using a consistent citation style. DO NOT number the references. There is no prescribed citation style for this assignment – just ensure whichever style you choose is used consistently throughout the document. You must include AT LEAST THREE of the academic sources provided in your final list of references.
9. Compile your Appendices. Attach your ORIGINAL Part A submission as the first Appendix of your assignment, for comparison by your marker. Include all other Appendices relevant to your analysis of the case (e.g. summary tools and analytical outputs) at the end of your report. There is no minimum number of additional Appendices required, and they do not count towards your overall word count. Ensure the Appendices are appropriate, tidy, readable and formatted professionally, in a style and manner consistent with the rest of the report.
