KPE 291 -  Heart Disease Database Statistics Assessment Answer

Task

1. Must use RStudio. An attached RStudio script is required for the project.

2. Must evaluate: mean, median, mode, z-score, variance/covariance, standard deviation, interquartile range, correlation; if data is normally distributed Pearson’s r is preferred, regression, p-value, degree of freedom, confidence intervals, skewness, kurtosis

3. Must include graph: standard deviation, regression, correlation, and histogram

Research question (can be modified if necessary): In cardiac patients from the United States and Europe, how does the amount of cholesterol in the blood influence the risk of a heart attack?

This term project will allow you to apply the statistical theory and tests you have learned this term to a real dataset. At the end of this course, it is hoped that you not only gain an appreciation of the many real-world applications of statistics but that you also have an idea of how to practically begin to answer a research question using the quantitative method.

Overview

While the research objectives and hypotheses are typically decided before data collection, for the purposes of this assignment you will be given a choice of four different pre-constructed datasets, from which you will identify a research question from one of the datasets and then use the techniques you have learned throughout the term to design a statistical approach to answer the question you have identified.

The above dataset contains nine subject rows containing participant data and three columns of data variables, labelled “Gender, Exam, Anxiety”. The first part of the assignment will consist of selecting a question. By looking at the variables given, there are a number of potential questions: 1) Is there a relationship between exam scores and anxiety? 2) Does anxiety differ in males vs. females? 3) Do exam scores differ in males vs. females? …etc. Remembering what you learned from this term, to answer question one, which contains the word “relationship”, may require a correlation or potentially a regression (depending on how you phrase the question and what you are interested in observing). For question two, where there is an interest in comparing two groups, a t-test may be useful. The main objective of the assignment is to identify a research question and implement a statistical test learned this term to answer the question.

Term Project Requirements

Rationale, Objective and Hypothesis

1. Identify a question of interest (objective) from one of the four datasets provided. Also, write a 250-word rationale justifying your research question and hypothesis. In this section use prior research (i.e., references) to support your rationale.

2. State the null and alternative hypothesis for your research question.

Methods

1. Identify and justify the statistical test(s) you will use to answer your question. This section should be limited to 2-5 sentences.

2. Using R, evaluate the skewness and kurtosis of one of your continuous variables, and plot the frequency distribution of that variable.

Results

1. Variables

a. List each relevant variable to your test, along with its type.

2. Descriptives

a. For one of your relevant continuous variables, in R, calculate the mean, median, mode, variance, standard deviation, and interquartile range.

3. Graph(s)

a. Create a graph(s) to illustrate potential between-group differences or relationships between variables.

4. Test Results

a. Using R, perform the statistical test(s) chosen to evaluate each hypothesis. Write your test results in sentence form, stating all relevant outputs.

Heart Disease Database

This dataset contains clinical and demographic information collected from patients admitted to four different cardiac centres in the United States and Europe based on symptoms of a potential cardiac event. Patients had basic a basic clinical workup, a blood sample taken, ECG performed and were subject to an exercise test.
