Kristi Brooks recently inherited a successful modelling and photography business that was started by her father, Terry. The business is based in Adelaide’s northern suburbs, and prior to Elizabeth getting her hands on the company her father had been the photographer and business owner since 1962.

Terry had started in the film era and didn’t make the change to digital photography until just eight years ago. Even then, his use of computers was limited to copying and printing the digital images. Accordingly, what Kristi has inherited is a business with a good list of ageing clients, a large library of photographic prints and negatives, 16 cameras (14 film and two digital), eight large filing cabinets full of documents, and one old laptop running Windows 7.

Her partner recommended that she just sell off the assets, but Kristi remembers the many hours she spent with her father in the studio, and still has deep and fond memories of the magic of watching a picture appear on a sheet of photographic paper. She loves all aspects of photography and is quite skilled in her own right, with a good eye for composition. Accordingly, she wants to make a go of it and see if she can keep the business running for another 60 years.

Kristi knows cameras, and she is more comfortable with computers than her father ever was, but she’s still far from an expert. She knows that she needs to digitalise the entire business, take it online to seek out new clients, and save the old records and photos before they get too damaged with time. But she doesn’t know how. Kristi is willing to learn new skills, and she has the time to put into making changes, but she needs to know what to do and what to buy.

This is where you come in. You’ve been hired as a consultant by Kristi in order to get things running. You need to make a series of recommendations to Kristi that will allow her to manage this within her budget.

Kristi needs:

• A computer to do the digital scanning

• A daily computer to run photoshop, tie into the server, and manage the business records

• A means of ensuring data integrity, including managing backups

• As some of the photos are quite personal, a method of securing the server from unwanted visitors while still allowing people to have access to selected photos

Kristi is also interested in moving into wedding and event photography in order to expand the business. If she was to take this route, she would need a means of securely copying and backing up photos while on the road, potentially from remote locations. It can be assumed that she will have internet access at all times.

Finally, a very close friend from high school – Elizabeth Bear – is heavily involved in computing and is a dedicated Linux user. Elizabeth has told Kristi that she should use Linux for the server and all other computers in her business. Kristi trusts Elizabeth, but wants your opinion, and is hoping that she can understand enough to explain her decision (for or against Linux) when she next meets up with her.
