1.       What is the lab’s purpose?  Right now in my mind, the purpose of the lab is to do the following:

A.     Provide a space, technology and resources to aid our students in the development of their analytics skills that support both learnings in and out of class

B.     The skills developed in the lab would provide students with the ability to gain better employment and would help them become preferred in the marketplace

C.      Space would also provide companies with the opportunity to employ students in a wide range of areas that include analytics, marketing, CRM, and research for these organizations on campus.  I envision it moving to a WE Work type of space where many types of roles and companies can be aided by the students working and being paid by them on campus and can also function as an analytics lab as well.

2.      What are good examples that already exist for this type of lab?  This is where I would like to ask you to do research.  Find 2 organizations and 4 colleges/universities that already have a similar type of space on-campus.  In doing this research I’d like for you to provide the following:

A.     Do they use the lab only internally or do they partner or work with outside companies?

B.     How much space and how many stations do these centres have?

C.      What kind of analytics are they doing (data, business, marketing, etc.) and what technologies are they using?

D.     How long ago was it opened and is it called a lab, centre, or something else?

3.      I already know this but I think it would be good for you to look for data that shows what the top analytical tools/technologies are preferred by businesses.  Use credible resources like Deloitte, PwC, and a host of top technical resource companies/magazines.  You’ll see excel, Python, R, and many others and it is important for you to remember we are looking at data/sales/marketing analysis, not really data science which will bring in items like SQL, VB programming, and others.

If you can summarize your thoughts and findings on the information above it would be beneficial to this project and to yourself and in the long-run will aid in what is developed.

4.      Next, I’d like for you to put together a project plan of the steps you think you would take to complete this project if it were yours alone.  Where would you start (using the above to provide you with your start)?  Your conclusion would be the opening of the space with all of the set-up, systems, and technologies in place, along with sponsors.  In-between is the fun part of getting to the final destination.
