Highlights
Description
The purpose of this assignment is to:
• Develop your skills working with library databases to identify appropriate peer-reviewed journal articles and scholarly sources;
• Practice reading, understanding, and assessing the usefulness of peer-reviewed scholarly sources to achieve research goals;
• Practice synthesizing and summarizing popular news articles, project documents and existing scholarship on a specific topic or concept;
• Practice using the APA citation system.
Step 1: Pick an issue or project from the list below. You can propose your own topic, but you have to email me by October 28th with a detailed description of the project and your reasons for selecting it.
Issues/Projects:
1. Landsdowne Park Redevelopment
2. Community and Police Relations in Ottawa
3. City of Ottawa’s Climate Change Plan
4. Cycling safety and infrastructure in Ottawa
5. Ottawa as a sanctuary city for migrants
Step 2: Begin doing some background reading on your project. You can start using Google. I’ve also posted links on cuLearn to project documents and reports related to these issues. These are a little longer, but they are essential for this assignment
Step 3: Use the Carleton Library website to search for scholarly articles connected to your topic (we will go over what is considered a scholarly article in tutorials and how to identify key issues or concepts connected to your topic). It is unlikely that there will be articles connected directly to your topic (although there may be some), so look for articles that deal with this topic in other contexts. For example, if you cannot find scholarly articles on community and police relations in Ottawa, look for articles on this topic in other cities. I have included a list of academic journals below that you can use to find articles.
Your paper should include the following components:
1. An introduction where you briefly summarize the urban re/development or issue. Brief information about the location of the development (if applicable) and the social context of the issue should be provided—for example, has this development resulted in community opposition? Was there extensive community involvement or consultation? You should explain why you picked this topic and why it is of interest to you. You should also provide an outline of your paper in the introduction.
2. Background on the re/development or issue: What are some of the factors that have contributed to this issue or development? Who are the major actors involved? How have different groups in the city responded to this issue? What groups will be affected? Are all groups affected equally? What do different project documents or reports say about this issue?
3. A discussion of existing academic research on this topic. How have different scholars approached this issue in other urban contexts? For example, how has the issue of cycling safety infrastructure been researched in Toronto or Vancouver? Are there differing interpretations among scholars about this issue? Do these scholars propose different recommendations?
4. An analysis/recommendations section where you compare the Ottawa development or issue to others case studies in popular or academic literature. You should develop 2 policy recommendations based on your research.
