Large-Scale Water Supply for the Unconfined Aquifer - Engineering Assignment Help

Assignment Task:

You are a consultant and you investigate the possibility of developing a well field for a large-scale water supply for the unconfined aquifer shown in the figure below. The first phase of the project consisted of drilling several observation wells and collecting data on the aquifer geometry, water table and water levels along the river (as shown in the table) and conducting a steady-state pumping test. The second phase consists of developing the aquifers potential for water supply.

Please provide your client with a report presenting each of the steps outlined below.

1. Hydrology

Using all available data, develop a hydrological groundwater map. That includes:

(a) Contour lines at 0.1 m intervals

(b) Boundary conditions (gaining or losing river sections, impermeable boundaries)

2. Parameter Estimation

To estimate the transmissivity of the aquifer a steady state pumping test has been conducted. Find attached the readings of the 4 observation wells in 0.8m, 30m, 90m and 400m distance (see table below for the drawdown of the 4 observation wells). Q for the pumping well was 800 m3/day.

(a) Plot the drawdown curves for the 4 observation wells and discuss the validity of the steady state pumping test and observations

(b) Estimate the parameters needed to assess a potential well configuration. If needed estimate additional parameters from literature. Justify all your assumptions. Discuss the uncertainties of the estimated parameters.

3. Scenario Testing

Investigate the potential of a well configuration to provide water to ~10.000 people (Assume 200 l/(person.day)).

(a) Calculate the drawdown of your well configuration and show the impact of the drawdown on the ground water table over the next 25 years.

(b) Assess the impact of your well on the aquifer considering the complex boundary conditions and calculate the well influence and stagnant point (approximate the piezometric surface). Show the piezometric surface of the superimposed well drawdown on the map.

(c) Show the wellhead protection zone where it takes groundwater to travel between five and two years to reach your water supply well
