Your presentation will have 2 components, a theoretical approach to the selected topic and a ‘real world’ application of the topic. - Select your topic. Some topics are broader than others, so it may be impractical and detract also from your critical analysis to cover every aspect of the topic. If, as an example, you choose to examine ‘A Career in the Law’ you might focus on one type of legal career, but briefly explain what motivated you to select that aspect of the topic.
- Select an activity that involves a practical application of the topic. This requires some thought and research.
- Decide on a technical format that you are comfortable with or one with which you would like to gain experience. There are resources on the Course website – under the Assignment 1 tab to assist you in making your choice of type of presentation.
- Contact the tutor to let them know your plans for parts 1 & 2 of the presentation (theoretical aspect and real world application). Make any adjustments according to feedback from the tutor.
- Review the course material related to the theory of the topic. Make notes and include references to the major sources where necessary.
- Conduct the real world activity. Take notes to record your impressions and make connections with the theoretical aspects of the topic.
- Write the script for your presentation. Have an audience in mind as you do this, and communicate clearly to that audience.
- As this is a formal presentation, remember to use appropriate language and tone
- Remember to provide connections between theory and application/example of your topic
- On the slides, rather than sentences and paragraphs, use brief information to indicate your main points.
- You may wish to summarise information or show relationships by using dot points or constructing diagrams or tables.
- Remember to acknowledge any sources you use, for example if you copy a diagram or table from another source.
- If you have chosen to present a spoken piece, practise speaking to ensure that your voice is clear, the information is logically ordered and the timing is correct.
