On the evening of Friday 20 March 2020, the Armidale Arms pub was full. People were on edge about this new coronavirus and the government had just announced that restrictions on indoor gatherings would begin the next day.

Jim was with his mates by the bar boasting about how he had spent the summer ‘getting ripped’ by working out daily in his new home gym and drinking protein shakes he’d seen advertised on TV. Jim dared his friend Alex (by far the biggest guy in the group) to punch him as hard as he could in the stomach to demonstrate his ‘abs of steel’. Alex just laughed and rolled his eyes, before Jim taunted him: ‘C’mon, are you scared of hurting your hand? Don’t be such a wimp – do it!’ Alex punched Jim hard in the stomach and Jim fell to the floor in agony. He was taken to hospital where he was diagnosed with a ruptured spleen caused by the punch. When asked about the incident by the police, Jim told them ‘it’s all good! I wanted Alex to do it’.

In a different room of the Armidale Arms, Naomi and her friends had had a few drinks and were mucking around while playing darts. Naomi was closing her eyes and spinning around a few times before opening them and attempting to throw the dart at the board. On the third attempt, as she was spinning around with her eyes still closed, she stumbled and the dart inadvertently flew out of her hand as she tried to regain her balance. The dart hit an elderly gentleman (Mr Miller) in his temple and he died instantly.
