Farrell did not need to think too carefully about the offer, given its size. In August 2020, Farrell transferred the title to land to the New South Wales Department of Roads in return for a payment of $27 million.

The road widening project was unpopular with Bringelly residents. These residents dubbed the parcel of land in question ‘the Bringelly Rhombus’, reflecting the land’s location and shape. They became aware of the compulsory acquisition of the land and the amount of money paid for it. One of the residents contacted Whit Michaelson, a journalist with the daily newspaper, The Sydney Sentinel. The resident suggested that Michaelson investigate the compulsory acquisition.

From the outset, Abrahams’ new neighbour, Sandra Kyle, was unimpressed by Abrahams moving into the neighbourhood. Kyle was a senior partner at law firm, Beattie & Sweet. Kyle tolerated Abrahams as a neighbour for six months but closely monitored her, suspecting, given her somewhat dubious past, that Abrahams would do something untoward.

Eventually, Kyle approached Channel Eight’s tabloid current affairs programme, A Nightly Affair with her grievances about Abrahams. A Nightly Affair decided to run a story on the neighbourhood dispute in Vaucluse, thinking it would make a pleasant change from its coverage of neighbourhood disputes in other, less salubrious locales.
