This task is the development of a Research Proposal. Your proposal is to be based on a topic of your own choice (including from the list of suggested topics). This task has been incrementally presented to so you (recall that each week you have been directed to prepare key elements of your Research Proposal, revising and refining as you go) so by that Week 7 you are in a position whereby you have already made a substantial start on what will be the final submission.
Supporting Activities As you will be aware by now, each Topic in this unit concludes with an activity – based on the content of that Topic/week – which activity is designed to assist you to prepare and to share a specific component of your Research Proposal, or to consider a specific question about your research. Those weekly activities are as follows.
Week 1: Identify a topic Think about some of the current issues in the area of law related to your work/study. Identify potential research topics related to these issues. Are these research topics of interest to you? If not, what is your area of research interest, and why? Identifying areas of interest and possible topics.
Week 2: The research question What are the objectives of your proposed research project? Consider how you will refine your proposal from area of interest to a topic and then to a particular research question. Define the scope of that question. Articulate it as an answerable research question.
Weeks 3: Researching the law With your research question in mind, develop a search strategy. Locate the literature relevant to your question. Assess your results further to focus your research question. Undertake further searches as necessary. Ensure you have a consistent and complete record management system. [Note the documents referred to in Part B of Topic 3 to assist you in this research process.]
Week 4: Your Literature Review: What is the current state of legal knowledge with respect to your research question? What legal evidence exists that allows you credibly to advance your argument? Do you need to revise your question?
Week 5: Methodology: Is your research expanded/critical legal research? What tradition does your research follow, and why? What is your research paradigm? What are the ontological and epistemological foundations of your methodology?
Week 6: Ethics: What ethical issues must you consider in your research project (including argument and process)? How will you address these issues? Are there any formal requirements for ethics approval?
