The Lazarus Effect
Researchers found that HIV/Aids has killed over 20 people in Africa, which is where the Lazarus effect has come into place. In recent years doctors have been giving out ANTIRETROVIRAL (ARV) medication to help patients stay alive. The researchers expected the Lazarus drug (ARV) to be successful for people with AIDS. They show throughout the video how each person that is affected by AIDS was changed by the Lazarus effect and prevented them from dying. Most of the people that were interviewed had family members that weren’t able to get (ARV) and ended up passing away because of it. The research participants in this film were people that lived in the area that wanted to help people or have already had it. Most of the people interviewed who had aids went through remarkable transformations to when they started taking (ARVs). It can take as few as 40 days for people to go from almost dying to being healthy again. One person who has been trying to help prevent AIDS is Constance Medenda who has started a support group and clinic to give treatment and care to those with AIDS. “In 2003, the Global Fund and Pepfar started funding free ARVs to countries in need” (7:49). Constance has been a big influence in the AIDS world and has treated many people. Inside of Constance's clinic she has file room for every patient that comes in, so she can let the patient know how much to take and what could happen if they stop using the medications. Now that ARVs are available at the clinic people are free to openly talk about HIV and not be scared to receive medications. “Now over 3 million people are receiving free ARVs across Africa” (29:11). What I found interesting in this research was how serious HIV was in Africa and how the Lazarus effect changed so many lives. I also found it interesting how people lost so much weight and were so close to dying and after taking ARVs they become healthy in as few as 40 days. Overall, this research was very interesting and I’m glad people across Africa are able to get treated for HIV.
