Assignment Task

Research Methods Assignment

The assignment involves a partial write up of the findings from the Leader-Member Relations Survey (LMRS). Details of the data set have been provided in class. Broadly, the task has two major components. First, to examine the data set using Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) to identify the dimensions underlying the items. Second, to use Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) to construct a model relating leadership characteristics to bullying and mental health outcomes based on evidence from the research literature.

The write-up of the report should have four components within two sections:

Section 1

  1. A brief Introduction
  2. Results of factor analysis
  3. Results of CFA and SEM
  4. A brief Discussion

Note, you have been provided with a Method section, read this, but it is not included in your report. Further guidance is given later in this document.

You can alter the balance of the report so that the introduction is longer and the results shorter, but do not exceed 3,000 words, and be aware that the greater weight of marks is attached to the results section.

The Leader-Member Relations Survey

The LMRS contains a demographics section.

  • This includes age, gender, ethnicity, country of origin, educational level, employment status, and occupational level.

You are to analyse all sections of the questionnaire with the exception of the demographic items, and items Q20 and Q19.

Introduction/Literature Review

 Relevant literatures would include;

  • Psychopathy, Narcissism and leadership.
  • Mental Health;
  • Counterproductive work behaviour.
  • Integrative models of (1)-(4).

Results 1: Exploratory Factor Analysis

EFA should be conducted using SPSS and following the guidance given in class, the materials on Blackboard, and the additional literature and recommended reading. Possible dimensions recovered via exploratory factor analysis could include:

  • Psychopathy: Manipulativeness, Callousness, Impulsivity and Criminality;
  • Narcissism;
  • Counterproductive Work Behaviour
  • Bullying
  • Mental Health

Results 2: Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Structural Equation Modelling

CFA:

  • Your task is to build a plausible structural model of the same Leader-Member Relations Survey data that you used in the EFA section of this course
  • You should build a CFA model first. Use your preferred EFA model, together with the method section I have provided you, to guide this process. Begin by testing single factor models for all scales.
  • Because of the sheer number of variables a full model will take a long time to run. For this reason it would be sensible once you have tested each scale separately for unidimensionality, that you form four parcels each for Counterproductive Work Behaviour, Bullying, and Mental Health. You might consider doing the same for Impulsivity.
  • Then add one factor at a time to the CFA model
  • If the fit is poor then use any of the strategies for improving fit before adding a new factor
