EDTA REFLECTION TASK INSTRUCTION:
Aim to complete your RT in about 1250 words (+ or - 10%) so you will need to be concise [these word limits exclude reference listings]
You will not be able to complete the RTs successfully by just quoting authors—at some point in each RT, you will need to state clearly what YOU think, based on your reading and experience.
If the material you cite has been referred to elsewhere (e.g., in the online unit readings), it is sufficient to use a simple acknowledgement such as 'This seems to be what Jaboson (2009) is referring to when she says ...'. If the reference has not been referred to in the notes or texts, acknowledge briefly in any sensible way in case the reader wants to find it.

‘Leadership Skills’ covers two essential sets of skills that leaders should master if they want to be effective influencers and change agents. The first is communication. This is a huge topic and indeed we could devise a whole unit on leadership or organisational communication and still not cover everything in what has over the last century become a vast field of scholarship and research. For Topic 9, though, we focus on the functions of messages and qualities of the communication climate as part of a wider ten component model of organisational communication. A lot of this material relates to the practice of leadership. In Topic 10 we look at some key managerial skills that assist with organisation and goal achievement. Note that the word ‘managerial’ has come up now. ‘Leadership’ and ‘management’ have often been touted as separate, even opposing notions. This is not right. While they do, as pure concepts, have to do with distinct behaviours, they are actually co-dependent. Successful leaders are able to manage well. Successful managers often need to lead people (Robbins, Bergman, Stagg & Coulter, 2009). This might seem confusing still so this is a good time to make a quick distinction between leading and managing. Leading is about influencing change and is focussed on questions like “Why do we do this?” and “How can we do things differently?”. Leading is influencing through the support, empowerment and inspiration of others. Managing is about keeping things in a state of order and control, is focussed on questions like “When will it be done?” and “How will it be done?” and a key part of managerial work in administration tasks such as organising people, organising things, budgeting, planning and goal-setting (Cole, 2019; Davidson, Simon, Woods & Griffin, 2009; DuBrin, 2016; Lunenburg & Ornstein, 2000). Importantly, in today’s organisations they depend on one another to work well.
