Learning Portfolio

A skill based, formative piece of work in which you will source a number of media articles with a focus on poor HR practice. Select your topics and work on them, discuss what went wrong and recommend the best HR practice that could have prevented it. The discussion is to be supported by contemporary literature. For example, a poor recruitment practice and decision resulting in either poor performance, dismissal, tarnished company reputation etc. Recommendations would then follow what would be deemed best HR practice for the organisation given its culture, size and type of role being recruited. It is important to demonstrate the interrelationship between the HR functionalities and the business strategy.

Topic Selection

The task is to select four (4) of the topics from the Unit content which you found either to be the most interesting, challenging or thought provoking. For each of the topics, you are to research and locate a contemporary HR news article which reflects poor HR practice on behalf of the organisation or industry cited by the article. A copy of the article link is to be included in your portfolio. For each of the topics you are to answer the following questions:

  1. What made you select this topic and why?
  2. Provide a summary of the article you selected, including a brief overview of why you chose it.
  3. In terms of the event or scenario the article outlines, please provide your assessment of what went wrong in terms of HR practice. For example, a poor recruitment practice and decision resulting in either poor performance, dismissal, tarnished company reputation etc.
  4. Provide an explanation and recommendations on what HR best practice would have prevented the situation or event from occurring. Support with research.

Assessment Lodgement

The Turnitin folder is in the assessments tab on Blackboard. You have the opportunity to lodge one draft to check the Turnitin report prior to your final submission (one draft and one final version).

Summary of Assessment Requirements

The assessment required students to create a Learning Portfolio focused on identifying and analyzing cases of poor HR practices reported in contemporary media. The key requirements were:

  • Select four (4) topics from the unit content that were interesting, challenging, or thought-provoking.
  • Source a contemporary HR news article for each topic highlighting poor HR practice.
  • For each topic/article, address:
    • Why the topic was selected.
    • A summary of the chosen article.
    • An analysis of what went wrong in terms of HR practice.
    • Recommendations for best HR practices that could have prevented the issue, supported with contemporary literature.
  • Demonstrate the interrelationship between HR functions and business strategy.
  • Submit the portfolio via Turnitin, with an opportunity for draft and final submission.

Step-by-Step Mentoring Approach

  1. Topic Selection Guidance

    • The mentor helped the student review the unit content to shortlist four themes that aligned with real-world HR issues.
    • The student was encouraged to pick cases that were both relevant to industry practice and had sufficient literature support for analysis.

  2. Sourcing Articles

    • The mentor guided the student in locating credible and recent media articles from reputable sources.
    • Emphasis was placed on ensuring each article clearly reflected a failure of HR practice (e.g., recruitment errors, workplace discrimination, poor employee relations, lack of compliance).

  3. Critical Analysis of HR Failures

    • The student was guided to break down each article into:
      • Context of the issue.
      • HR functionality involved (e.g., recruitment, performance management, training, compliance).
      • The impact on business strategy (e.g., turnover costs, reputation damage, legal risks).

  4. Developing Recommendations

    • The mentor supported the student in formulating evidence-based recommendations grounded in contemporary HR literature and frameworks.
    • Each recommendation was linked back to how best HR practice could have prevented the issue, ensuring academic rigor and practical insight.

  5. Structuring the Portfolio

    • The mentor advised on how to present each topic in a clear, structured, and consistent format, ensuring alignment with assessment requirements.
    • APA 7th edition referencing was reinforced throughout.

  6. Draft Review and Feedback

    • Before submission, the student submitted a draft on Turnitin.
    • The mentor reviewed the originality report and provided feedback on paraphrasing, citation accuracy, and strengthening the academic voice.

Outcome and Learning Objectives Achieved

By completing the portfolio, the student:

  • Developed the ability to critically analyze real-world HR issues using contemporary theory.
  • Understood the link between HR practice and business strategy, recognizing the organizational consequences of poor HR management.
  • Practiced evidence-based problem solving by providing recommendations rooted in best practice.
  • Enhanced skills in academic writing, referencing, and critical reflection.
  • Learned to integrate theoretical HR concepts with practical, real-world scenarios.
