Assessment Brief

Develop and write your response as a social worker/nursing professional, to a 'real world' scenario. You are required to discuss and explain how you would address this scenario based on the key concepts delivered the in this unit and your own self-directed research and learning.

You are on placement at a local primary health care and community centre and you are sitting in on appointments with worker, Sue. It is your first day on placement. Ruby has the next appointment. She is in the waiting area with her baby, mum, aunty and grandmother.

Sue goes to get Ruby. Ruby, her mum, aunty and grandmother all get up to come into the appointment. Sue invites Ruby into the consultation room, but says Ruby's mum, aunty and grandmother can sit in the waiting room with baby. Initially, Ruby seems a bit tentative to come into the consultation room, but soon follows Sue into the room. Sue sits behind a desk and invites Ruby to sit on the other side. You sit in the corner of the room, on a chair Sue provided you with earlier. Ruby says she would like to discuss birth control options as she had baby 6 weeks ago and also has a 2-year-old and 5-year-old at home. She says her husband is a fly-in-fly-out mining worker. So, she feels she has a lot going on at home at the moment and her husband is away a great deal of the time. She says she is very close to her mum, aunty and grandmother, who support her and help her looking after the children.

Sue pulls out a pile of pamphlets and hands them to Ruby and hurriedly offers family planning advice. She then askes Ruby if she understands. Ruby sits quietly for a moment, and then says yes. When you are leaving placement that afternoon, you notice all of the pamphlets that were handed to Ruby in the rubbish bin out the front of the centre.
