At the end of the week, the students are required to produce a simple cabinet that they will present in class. It is almost the end of the week, and the teacher, Calvin Henson, noticed that a lot of girls in the class are lagging behind in their production. On Friday, Mr Henson checks all the cabinets made by the students. He then makes a comment by saying, “Girls should be just homemakers!” One of the students from that class tells you that Mr Henson often makes that remark with female students. She also tells you that he would usually give a higher score for the projects submitted by male students. On another occasion, the students are tasked to create a design for the furniture that in the even that they will be selling these to clients. Rianna, a student from Mr Henson’s class, is from an Aboriginal background. She designs her piece of furniture by incorporating drawings and painting the front of her piece of furniture. These drawings reflect her Aboriginal heritage. Mr Henson sarcastically tells her that people from her race would surely get rich by making a living out of furniture. As an education support worker, you are becoming concerned that Mr Henson is affecting the health and well-being of the students. Part of the school’s policies and procedures is to notify your supervising teacher or the principal if you notice any violations to legislation which may involve the school staff and/or the students.
