Levelling Survey and Volume Calculation Report for Excavation Assignment

Assignment Task

The imaginary scenario for this report is that the university requires the grass-covered slope/mound near the Fasset Road entrance (Penrhyn Road campus) to be excavated down to the level of the current surface of the adjacent parking bays. A contract for this work requires the volume of soil to be excavated, removed from the site and disposed of. This assessment concerns the determination of this volume of soil by means of a levelling survey.
The marking criteria (below) specify the precise requirements of each section of this report and the corresponding marks available. In summary, you will need to do the following:

1. prepare a full safety risk assessment for this work (i.e. things that may affect your instruments or measurements are not relevant) as instructed in the relevant session;

2. do the levelling survey as specified in the instructions for 'Practical 1 - Levelling Survey', including all sketches, calculations and quality evaluations;

3. use the results from the levelling survey to calculate the volume of soil to be removed from the surveyed project site, using the method(s) presented in the relevant lectures/ workshops, and the corresponding mass assuming a bulk density of 1.55 t m-3 since this will affect the number of lorries required (soil-carrying lorries can carry typically 15- 19 tonnes at a time).
General instructions

You are required to present your work in a technical written report augmented with sketches, diagrams and calculations as appropriate, according to the structure specified in the marking criteria. Pages of the field books should be removed and photographed or scanned for inclusion in the report showing the original booked data (do not re-type the data). The report should be presented in the given order and clearly labelled with headings. All items must be included within the relevant section. Sketches and print-outs etc. must be correctly identified and labelled as Figures or Tables as appropriate.

This is an individual report. You must ensure that you have your own copies of all relevant information (measurements, sketches, etc.) before you leave the session. The report should contain a maximum of words (less than 3 pages at Arial 11pt single-spaced) + Figures, Tables and References.
