Question 1 - A multi-national company, Solid-as-a-Rock, based in the USA, have decided to close their South African subsidiary. The South African subsidiary imported finished luxury jewellery from the parent company. They then marketed and sold these luxury items in South Africa. Overall, they were breaking even. The USA parent offers the SA subsidiary to the management of the marketing and sales departments as a management buy-out. The USA company financed the buy-out with a low interest loan. The SA company keep most of their marketing staff, who are senior in both experience and success. The current marketing staff consist of 11 white male members between the ages 40-50.

The SA take-over, Success-will-follow, plan to eventually buy the raw material, gold, diamonds etc, themselves, refine these and then market and sell them in SA.
Their marketing research has also shown that a big and viable African market exist. They contract you to plan, develop and manage their HR function.

Q.1.1 You do a presentation to the management in which you discuss current global HR trends and how these will impact their company. The global trends in Section 3.2 of the section was published in 2017. You therefore cannot use them, unless these, according to your research, still apply. You have to do research on Google to ascertain current trends, give the worldwide pandemic.
You will be awarded one mark for any relevant trend.
You will be awarded another mark for the application of each of the above trends to the SA company.

Q.1.2 You have a strategic session with the management, during which the vision, mission, strategic objectives and values of the company were discussed, clarified and finalised.

They ask you to provide them with a strategic HR management plan based on a strategic HR management process. Use the contents in the above case study, as well as any relevant contents in your answer to Q.2.1. You are allowed to make relevant assumptions to provide you with some of contents for the steps of the process. You will be awarded a maximum of 5 marks for your discussion of each of the steps of the process.

Q.1.3 The management of the company informs you that the marketing consultants have become demotivated and less productive. You do a questionnaire and the results show that staff are unsure about their future with the company. This includes possible promotions, retraining to keep up with current worldwide trends and how the vision on refining the raw material will impact on them.
