Question 1 A hospital in a remote suburb opens from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm every day, and all residents of this suburb come to this hospital when they are not feeling well. Assume that the cumulative inflow to hospital is the same every day and the cumulative outflow from the hospital is also the same every day. To provide better services, the hospital improvesits efficiency by hiring an operations manager. Assume that the cumulative inflow of hospital is the same before and after hiring the operations manager. However, after hiring the operations manager, the average flow time and average inventory are reduced. The following figure gives the cumulative numbers of patients who arrive at the hospital before and after hiring the operations manager (they are the same curve), the cumulative number of patients who depart from the hospital before hiring the operations manager, and the cumulative number of patients who depart from the hospital after hiring the operations manager. Figure 1 Cumulative inflow and outflow of the hospital 8:00 am 8:00 pm Time Cumulative number of patients A B C 120 Q1.1 Please answer which curve (i.e., A, B or C) corresponds to the cumulative number of patients who arrive at the hospital before hiring the operations manager, which curve (i.e., A, B or C) corresponds to the cumulative number of patients who depart from the hospital before hiring the operations manager, and which curve (i.e., A, B or C) corresponds to the cumulative 5 number of patients who depart from the hospital after hiring the operations manager. (You do not have to show your calculation.) Q1.2 A larger hospital located in another suburb also opens from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm but serves 200 patients each day. Please draw the inflow and outflow curves of patients of this larger hospital in Figure 1. (You do not have to show your calculation.) Note: i) both curves should be drawn in Figure 1; ii) you should point out which curve is inflow and which one is outflow; iii) since we do not know the exact arrival time and departure time of each patient, the two curves are not unique, and you will obtain full score as long as the curves are consistent with the information provided.
Question 2 (1 Points) A restaurant serves dine-in customers only. (Note: a dine-in customer eats in the restaurant instead of taking the food away.) Customers will sit down and a waiter will come to customers to take orders. Eating in the restaurant, a customer is chatting with the restaurant owner. ? Owner: This restaurant opens for 12 hours and serves as many as 1000 dine-in customers each day. ? Customer: How many seats does this restaurant have? I hear Hong Kong’s rental cost is very high. ? Owner: We have 3 tables, each having 4 seats. ? Customer: You are bragging about the number of customers served each day. Please explain why the customer thinks the owner is bragging. (Hint: What is the average flow rate? What is the maximum inventory of the restaurant? The average inventory should not be greater than the maximum inventory. Then, what is the largest possible value of the average flow time? Is it possible to finish ordering and eating within the largest possible value of the average flow time?)
