PURPOSE

A study from Radford University found that approximately 26% of lust serial killers had experienced childhood sexual abuse (CSA) (Mitchell & Aamodt, 2005). Organised lust serial killer, Aileen Wuornos (Chesler, 1993) is an example of the potential link between CSA and serial, homicidal tendencies. Despite not all survivors of CSA possessing such inclinations, further research regarding this connection is essential.

BACKGROUND

Difficulty arises when defining women who commit serial homicide, as their behaviours oppose contemporary understandings of femininity and womanhood (Seal, 2010). A study conducted by Hickey (1992) found that only 17% of serial killers were female, whereas 83% were male. However, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) (2005) defines ‘serial killings’ as a series of at least three murders, occurring over a period greater than one month, with each of the murders possessing common characteristics. Wuornos is considered to be a ‘serial killer’ as the crimes she committed comply with all requirements listed by the FBI. As information surrounding female serial killers is limited, further research ought to be conducted into the case of Aileen Wuornos and the ramifications of being a victim of CSA.
