Theme:
Belief in God is a significant theme in the film Life of Pi. Pi Patel makes his belief in and love of God clear in the entire film. It is a love profound enough that he can rise above the traditional divisions of worship and religion as a Hindu, Christian and Muslim. Pi, although surprised by the possibility of lacking this belief, still respects the agnostic, because Pi sees him as a kind of believer. Pi’s vision of an agnostic on his death bed makes it clear that he assumes the agnostic’s form of belief is one in God, without his realizing it until the end.
The struggle for survival is also a theme in the film. Pi is compelled to surrender his deep rooted vegetarianism and pacifism, as he has to kill and eat turtles and fishes. This theme is clear all through his trial, he should eat meat, he should take life, two things which had consistently been abomination to him before his survival was at stake. Survival always trumps morality, even for a character like Pi Patel, who is principled and religious.
