Literature Review is a coherent essay of a literature review. It will be a review of the literature directly related to the topic under study, followed by an explanation of how a research question grows out of that review that is, showing how the research focus identified in term of a “gap” in previous research. The purpose of the literature review is to know what others have discovered to ground your study in a context of what is known about a subject in order to establish a foundation for the topic (or question) being researched.
The purpose of this assignment is to facilitate your abilities to research a topic of study so you can learn to:
(1) Know how to search and locate literature (e.g. Journal articles) using library and internet resources;
(2) Analyse and critically evaluate and appraise information found in scholarly research journal articles and cite the literature sources, and
(3) Synthesise knowledge and information into a written literature review and
(4) Establish context for your inquiries.
Assignment Description and Requirements:
For this essay you are asked to complete a literature appraisal and a review on an allocated topic. Refine the topic and formulate a problem statement.
Locate journal articles and reference books on the allocated topic.
MMI: Literature review content only- 1000 words maximum (excludes cover page, table of content, declaration and reference list). Minimum - 8 Scholarly research journal articles citation and references not older than 5years.
Choose one article that you have sourced to appraise. Conduct an appraisal and evaluate your appraisal thereafter supported with research referenced literature sources. Include this evaluation as part of your appendix.
Tips for your literature appraisal and review:
Note it is important that you read the prescribed chapters and lecture material for you to effectively tackle this task. Please set a side at least two to three weeks for write up.
1. Formulate an inquiry question that specifically describes what would like to know about the topic. 2. Go to the library and/or electronically search for and locate journals that include your topic’s information.
3. Find articles, read the abstracts and skim the articles to determine if they correspond well to your topic AND inquiry question.
4. Select journal articles most relevant to your topic.
6. Read your articles and begin to sort and classify them.
7. At this point conduct an appraisal to establish the validity of the study, etc. This appraisal will form part o the appendix.
7.1 Develop an authentic appraisal form indicating by means of intext citation where the information was sourced from.
7.2 This form should consist of a table with three columns. The first column is the elements/ criteria, the second column the descriptors for the respective items and the third is where you will provide your comments with evidence. Note where applicable intext citation must be included.
8. Organise the information sourced from all the articles by sorting and classifying into themes in a meaningful way, always considering your original topic and inquiry question.
9. Write an outline for your literature review.
10. Write your literature review with evidence.
11. Revise your review.
Structural guidelines for the literature appraisal and review essay
These guidelines must be used with the rubric and vice versa.
Typed and the font type Arial and size for the title 16, headings 14, subheadings 12 and content 10.
Typed and 1.15 line spacing, and free of typographical errors; proper margins and spacing (no attempts to avoid space requirements by quadruple spacing, 2.5cm margins, etc.)
Pages numbered from the actual content onwards.
Cover page to include as prescribed for this unit: name and last name (surname), Unit, date, and title of the essay on the first page (no page number),
Statutory Declaration Statement (separate page) and table of contents page (do not number this page).
APA style reference list and intext as prescribed for this unit, that is, including page number/s intext citation and page range included in reference list (see Example-Expectations).

Guidelines for writing your literature appraisal and review report:
This outline must be used with the rubric, lectures and reading material.
1. Introduction
Write an introduction paragraph for your review. This paragraph includes:
a. statement on the topic, rational, purpose and an inquiry question for this review
b. Provide the reader specific information on how many articles you reviewed and how you sorted the articles into common themes based on findings (results).
2. Search strategy
Detailed outline of the search strategy and how you narrowed down to the keywords including inclusion and exclusion criteria.
3. Body (without this heading)
Before you begin this section, be sure that you have sorted your articles into themes based on the information sourced. After you sort your articles, it is important to give your sorted groups a descriptive name. The names of the sorted articles will become your headings for each of the paragraphs that you write in the body of your review. The body of your literature review will include,
a. Theme 1: a paragraph or several paragraphs that describe the first theme that you identified and compare, contrast and/or connect the articles you’ve selected.
b. Theme 2: a paragraph or several paragraphs that describes the second theme that you identified and compare, contrast and/or connect the articles you’ve selected.
c. Theme 3: a paragraph or several paragraphs that describes the third theme that you identified and compare, contrast and/or connect the articles you’ve selected.
Discussion
Two paragraph or two on answering the research question and addressing the problem statement connecting to the introduction and findings from the literature sources. Show evidence of arguments, integration and synthesis
4 Conclusion
This is the last paragraph of your literature review. In this paragraph, it is important to briefly summarise the main findings linking it back to the topic and identify gaps and/ or short comings.
5. References
This is the last pages of your review serves as a listing of all references that you mentioned in your paper. Please make sure that only references cited in your content will be listed here. Please use APA style with page numbers when completing this list.
