In the international literature, active learning approaches to health professions education has recently been seen to replace the more traditional methods of learning.  The aim of active learning for health care professionals is to provide opportunities for learners to think critically about content through a range of learning activities that help prepare them for the challenges of clinical work. In preparation for facilitation of active learning, the teacher needs to be able to demonstrate knowledge of the theories, concepts and principles that underpin active learning. 

This assessment item is the first step in your preparation as a contemporary health professions educator, who facilitates learning through active engagement.  During week 1, you will learn about the context of health professional education, along with some contemporary issues related to teaching and learning within healthcare.  In week 2, you will explore the attributes of a number of educational learning theories that relate to active learning.
