Introduction Amputation is a medical term relating to the removal or loss of a limb due to illness, trauma or surgery. When the loss / absence of a limb is congenital, it is known as Amelia or Meromelia (L. Patti et al., 2003). The function of amputation is primarily to avoid further progression of a disease, or to manage pain. The majority of amputations occur due to vascular disorders, such as gangrene, atherosclerosis and peripheral vascular disease. With a significantly high percentage of amputees also having a comorbid diagnosis of type 1 diabetes (K. ZielgerGraham et al., 2007). Peripheral Vascular Disease (PVD) and Diabetes are the leading cause of limb loss within Australia and the United States (L. Fortington et al., 2017), accounting for 54% of all limb amputations, with trauma following at 45%, other minor causes of amputation are cancer, osteomyelitis and sepsis. PVD is caused by constriction of cardiac and neural blood vessels and arteries due to collection of fat and calcium within the bloodstream. The lipid and calcium compound forms into a hardened plaque, constricting vessels and impeding the ability of blood to flow and travel throughout the body. The most common side effect of strong and chronic PVD is acute or chronic limb ischemia, in which, a limb becomes severely less viable due to occlusion of vital vascular pathways. This presents clinically as severe pain and localised loss of temperature to the affected limb (poikilothermia), in addition to localised weakness or paralysis (M. Creager et al., 2012). Acute Limb Ischemia develops readily into its chronic counterpart, with the viability of the limb being severely diminished at that point. The availability of nutrients to the muscles and nerves decreases, resulting in a lack of cellular development, healing, and mild muscular atrophy. Without emergency revascularisation surgery, the limb will become gangrenous and may start to necrotise, which can consequently cause severe and often fatal septicaemia. Thus, amputation surgery is often undertaken in patients with amplified limb ischemia as a preventative measure to reduce mortality.
