You are conducting and writing a literature review on a clinical issue, including identifying possible interventions to address the clinical issue to improve the safety and quality of nursing care. 

Task  

Identify a clinical issue in nursing practice that aligns with one of the following National Quality and Safety Health Service Standards [2nd Edition] (Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care, 2021): 

• Preventing and controlling infections standard 
• Medication safety standard 
• Comprehensive care standard 

Select a clinical issue that you have observed while on placement, or from the research literature. 

This clinical issue must relate to the identified National Quality and Safety Health Service Standards above that is, an infection control issue, a medication error, patient falls, development of pressure sores, or cognitive impairment. 

Synthesise your findings and develop your report using the following guide:  

Introduce the literature review

Provide a background to the clinical issue 

• Expand on the clinical issue in nursing practice from the perspective of the nurse, patient, unit/ward or organisation.

Describe the literature review process

• Identify the search terms, databases, and limits of the search – years searched, language of literature. 
• Explain how you selected the papers - inclusion and exclusion criteria. 
• Provide a table detailing your search and selection of papers. 
• Provide a summary table of the literature that includes authors, country of study, design, aim of study/problem investigated, setting/s, participants, and findings. 
• Identify your findings – number of papers, country of origin, mode of research.
• Report the extent of the problem identified in the literature.
• Report on the causative factors of the clinical issue identified in the literature.
• Describe the evidence-based interventions for preventing or minimising the impact of the issue.

Discussion

• Synthesise the literature to provide a cohesive overview of the current state of knowledge regarding the issue. Integrate the studies’ findings including comparing outcomes and identifying limitations. 
• Describe how the findings of the literature review can be applied to reduce clinical risk. 

Conclusion

• Summarise the key findings of the literature review.
