Assignment task: Question: John, Paul, George and Ringo have all been charged with assault after a wild brawl with the Rolling Stones at the Abbey Road Hotel. Each of them come to see you, a criminal lawyer, to discuss their case. a. John assaulted Ronnie with a pool stick. He was enraged that Ronnie had made a pass at Yoko. He picked-up a pool stick walked over to Ronnie and said, “I’m going to hospitalise you”. He then hit Ronnie several time with the stick. Ronnie suffered broken ribs, concussion, several bruises, and required 15 stitches in his skull. Ronnie spent overnight in the hospital. b. Paul sees what is happening with John and Ronnie. Paul decides to scare Ronnie in order to help John, his co-writing friend. Paul picks up a billiard ball and attempts to throw it 2 meters over Ronnie’s head. Unfortunately, the ball hits Ronnie in the nose causing it to break. Paul did not intend for the ball to hit Ronnie. c. George sees that things are getting out of hand. He walks over to where Ronnie is lying on the floor. At this time, Keith comes running over to Ronnie’s aid. George says to Keith, “Relax, I am just here to calm things down”. Keith tells George to “Get stuffed”, and attempts to walk past George and over to Ronnie. As Keith attempts to walk past, George shoves Keith in the chest. Keith is forced back but suffers no real injury. d. Ringo then comes over to see what he can do. As he approaches, he notices one of Jagger’s groupies, Swift, mouthing off at John, Paul and George. Ringo approaches the woman and says, “You betta shut-up or else”. Swift then says, “Piss-off Ringo. You are the weak link of the band”. Enraged by this hurtful comment, Ringo punches Swift in the mouth. Swift suffers a cut lip, but no serious injury. Required With reference to both statute and case law, advise John, Paul, George and Ringo of the assault charges they are likely to be charged with.
