An eight-storey residential building is to be constructed at Zetland, Sydney. The architectural drawings of the proposed building are given in Figure 1 and 2. Your team is assigned to analyse and design the structural members of the proposed building. The beam-column layout for structural design  

Design Information 

1. Concrete compressive strength for columns, f’c = 50 MPa

2. Concrete compressive strength for all other members, f’c = 40 MPa

3. Yield strength of all reinforcing steel, fsy = 500 MPa 

4. Yield strength of reinforcement for stirrups and ties, fsy.f = 400 MPa 

5. Yield strength of reinforcement for ties in columns, fsy.f = 500 MPa 

6. Loads 

a) Must consider self-weight of all structural components 

b) Superimposed dead load on the slab = 2.0 kPa 

c) Live load on the slabs of all floors   kPa, n is the average of the last digit in the student numbers of the group. Take one digit after decimal and round it up. 

Load Combinations 

a) Calculate the dead loads of all structural members. Determine the load combinations of dead loads and live loads according to AS/NZS 1170.0 (2002) and AS/NZS 1170.1 (2002). Do not consider the effect of wind load. 

b) Determine the required design actions such as moment (M*), shear (V*) and axial force (N*) for (i) beams at Strength Limit States and Serviceability Limit State and 

(ii) columns at Strength Limit State only
