Highlights
Assessment Item 3 has two major components:
1. A self-reflection and peer assessment piece. commencing Monday 25th May – via an online discussion board format (this will be a different discussion board to the current one). This will be worth 10% of your overall grade.
2. Two (2) short essays to be submitted via Turnitin by Wednesday 3rd of June. The essays will be worth 20% each, for a total of 40%. You will be given a selection of different topics to choose two from to write your essays.
Instructions
Essays
You need to produce and submit two (2) essays from a choice of eight topics. The essays are worth 20% of your total grade each and are drawn from content across the semester. The essays must be between 500-800 words each. You must choose two topics from the following:
Essay Topic Selection
1. Discuss the lock-and-key theorem of enzyme-substrate interaction, providing an example of an enzyme and its substrate and an explanation of how protein structure influences enzyme function. In your response you will need to consider the various levels of protein structure and at least two conditions that lead to protein denaturation.
2. Discuss the importance of the plasma membrane in maintaining cell homeostasis. In your response you will need to explain the structure and physiochemical properties of the plasma membrane that contribute to its function. You will need to explain the variety of passive and active membrane transport mechanisms that exist for cells.
3. Discuss the process required to synthesise an integral membrane protein and two different types of inhibition that can disrupt cell signalling. In your response you need to explain in adequate depth the process of translation, what structure/s of the polypeptide are necessary for an integral membrane protein, and what are the different types of cell surface receptor inhibition.
4. Many complex organisms, such as homo sapiens, have relatively small genomes compared to their level of biological complexity. Discuss the diversity of protein functionality within eukaryotes. In your response you need to discuss eight different types of protein functionality and provide brief examples for each.
5. Discuss the main types of cytoskeletal fibres in eukaryotic cells and how the cytoskeleton contributes to cellular mitosis. In your response you must describe three main fibre types and explain mitosis, its phases, and the role of key cytoskeleton components/fibres only at each phase.
6. Discuss the key similarities and differences between proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids (monomers and polymers) and their involvement in cellular respiration.
In your response you need to identify two similar aspects and three key differences between proteins carbohydrate and lipids (at the monomer and polymer levels combined) and explain how these differences are critical to cell respiration (you will need to briefly describe the 3 main parts of cellular respiration and provide one example each of where proteins, carbohydrates and lipids are important in the whole process). *Note lipids are not true polymers but in this instance, we will treat lipid polymers as structures more complex than a single fatty acid.
7. Discuss the Wobble hypothesis and how this enables proteins to be synthesised from the code in DNA. In your response you need to explain the following key concepts: DNA and bases, genes and, briefly, the processes of transcription, RNA processing and translation.
8. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of lipids as an energy source compared to carbohydrates and proteins. In your response you will need to explain the basic structure of the three [monomer] molecules, the metabolism of lipids and its advantages and disadvantages in human health and nutrition.
