Answer the questions by using the relevant theory as your starting point, and demonstrate your understanding of the theory by analysing and applying it in your answers to the questions. To complete this assignment, you are required to consult a variety of sources, including the relevant lessons; some of the suggested books; the relevant e-reserves; relevant news reports; information obtained from reliable internet sites; and so forth.
Question 1
Employers and employees are regarded as the primary role players in the employment relationship. However, within the context of labour relations, these parties seldom interact as individuals, but are represented by various collective bodies. Identify the representatives of both employers and employees in the above case study. Critically evaluate the roles of these representatives within a company, industry and the broader South African labour relations environment. (15)
Question 2
Traditionally there are three main perspectives, ideologies or world views relating to the conflict and/or common-ground aspects present in any system of labour relations and how these should be approached, namely the unitarist perspective, the pluralist perspective and the radical perspective. Visit the website of the Security Association of South Africa (http://www.sasecurity.co.za/), which is an employers’ organisation in the private security industry of South Arica. Click on Membership, then on Gold Membership and then on Gold Members List. Choose any security company from that list and then answer the following question:
Identify the dominant perspective held by the specific organisation and briefly explain what this perspective entails. In your explanation, you should indicate where the various characteristics of this perspective are evident in the specific organisation. (10)
Question 3
Read the following extract from a news article and answer the question that follows: Women are making their way into the traditionally male-dominated industries, and the security industry is no exception. The ADT Central Region (Johannesburg, Kimberley, Bloemfontein, Welkom and Vaal) has four female heads of department and a growing number of female level 5 managers, security guards, technicians and even a female reaction officer.
Roy Rawlins, managing director of ADT Residential and Small Business, says women are coming into their own in the security industry and there are many employment opportunities for women in what was onceperceived as a male-dominated sector.
“Traditionally women held mainly administrative positions. Now we are seeing women assuming leadership positions as well as on-the-ground roles as security guards and reaction officers. These women are highly capable and are proving they can do the job just as well, if not better, than their male counterparts,” he says.
