Change Project Option A:
Identification, Design, Implementation and Evaluation of a Change Management Project:
In this progressive assignment series, the learner will demonstrate the relationship between core competencies and the understanding of leadership influence, change management theory, and organizational structure and culture in affecting a positive change in the behaviour of others. Through the analysis of organizational theory and culture, change theory, and the role of leadership within the clinical/placement setting, the student will formulate and undertake the identification, design, implementation and evaluation of a small-scale change project in their clinical placement setting. The change project being analyzed must have included a resultant planned change in the behaviour of members within the healthcare team.
The student must obtain approval from an appropriate level(s) or organizational authorities to initiate and facilitate the change project. Students may consult with the course professor to ensure their chosen project will facilitate their meeting the course objectives. The change project identified in Assignment 1 must be unless otherwise approved by the course professor, the same project continued within Assignments 2 and 4 for this course.
Option A: Assignment 1
Template for Change Management Project:
In order to communicate with your course professor related to your change project, you must submit a template for your change project via the assignment submission portal on the course Blackboard site. This is an informal paper and does not require an introduction, conclusion, title page, or reference list. The submitted assignment must be in the provided template format. The naming convention for the submission is:
In a 10 minute or lessor duration Panopto video with a PowerPoint presentation, briefly describe each of the following:
1. Clinical placement area (acute care, community, medical/surgical etc.)
2. Identified need/situation/ or focus of change project as evidenced by data and referenced scholarly evidence.
3. The goal/objective of the change to be enacted (note it must focus on a change in behaviours or practices by co-workers
4. Change theory approach to be used (include scholarly references)
5. What is/are your role(s) as nurse leader to facilitate this change?
6. The leadership style you will use to influence change (include scholarly references)
7. Key stakeholders involved
8. Approval processes required (refer to organizational structures). Focus on the impact of the approval process. Limit your approval to the aspect of the organizational structure that is directly related to your project.
9. Timeline for project design and implementation using a preliminary Gantt chart
10. A planned a comprehensive approach to evaluate change process and outcome
Option A: Assignment 2:
This paper is a windshield survey of the organization and the unit that the learner is placed in for their clinical placement this term. Reflect on your socialization into this organization.
A: Organizational Theory Section:
The purpose of this part of the paper is to briefly describe the organization through the application of one or more of the classical organizational theories (i.e., the theories developed from Frederick Taylor’s Scientific Management Theory, Henri Fayol’s Administrative Theory, and Max Weber’s Bureaucracy Theory). Use your chosen theory to briefly describe the clinical organization with consideration of factors such as duty, the chain of command, the span of control, decision making, attitudes, morale, behaviours, roles, and personality. It is important to be aware of these factors as they will shape the approval process for your change project. Finish this section with a description of how this theory is a good fit for your organization.
B: Organizational Culture:
The purpose of this part of the paper is to analyze the culture of your clinical setting. It is important to be aware of the culture of your setting because evidence suggests culture is a major factor that shapes nurses’ roles in organizations. Culture is not overt. It is not palpable or tangible. Data that will indicate the culture of your organizational setting can be accessed by communicating with those who work in this setting, accessing the organization’s website, and interviewing your leader/coworkers. These assessments will be useful to know when trying to create a change in your clinical setting. In this section of the paper, you will use two tools to assess and describe the organizational culture of your setting:
This section should consist of an integration of the following elements:
1. Using Schein’s framework, assess the organizational culture and climate of the organization/practice setting.
2. In this section of your paper, you must demonstrate an understanding of the 3 levels of organizational culture and how these factors apply to your placement setting.
3. Pay particular attention to understanding the espoused beliefs vs. enacted assumptions of the organization/practice setting (i.e., examine the degree to which the organization’s mission, vision and values [espoused values] are or are not reflected in the daily functioning and cultural norms demonstrated on your unit [enacted values/assumptions]. Are there practice assumptions that you see in the subculture of the unit?)
4. It will be helpful to spend time and effort interviewing, assessing for, and observing the assumptions on the unit that shape nursing practice. In an appendix to your paper, you must provide evidence of your assessment using the Schein framework (include the table here).
C: Leadership:
In this section of your paper, provide a brief review of the literature describing various leadership styles and then use at least one leadership style to analyze someone at your placement site who functions in a formal or informal leadership role in order to understand leadership in-action. In this assignment, you must complete an interview with the selected leader. Prior to the interview, you will develop an interview guide (this means a conversation guided by some main questions) pertaining to formal or informal leadership roles and responsibilities, power, and/or mentorship. Based on this data collection, you will direct the focus of your paper to analyzing the leadership style(s) and characteristics of the selected leader. It is important to realize that rarely does one
person ‘fit’ the ideals of one particular leadership style. It is expected that you will
identify both ‘fit’ and ‘non-fit’ between the leader and the applied leadership style, and comment on this ‘theory-practice gap’. The interview guide and responses must be included as an appendix to the paper.
This section of the paper should include an integration of the following elements:
A concise synthesis of the literature exploring key elements of leadership styles and theory; and
Critical analysis of your chosen leader using one or more leadership style, effects on performance on the unit, and suggestions of optional approaches that would be beneficial to the unit.
Option A: Assignment 3:
Leadership in a Change Project: Panopto e-Presentation:
In this major assignment, the learner will demonstrate the relationship between core competencies and the actualization of leadership influence in affecting a positive change in the behaviour of others. Through the analysis of organizational theory, culture, and the role of leadership within the clinical/placement setting, the student will formulate and undertake a change plan and project that includes formal and informal input from key stakeholders and that anticipates a resultant change in the behaviour of others. The student must include how they sought approval within their institution/agency to initiate and facilitate a realistic and manageable small-scale change project.
This assignment is a progression from Assignments 1 and 2. Theory and analyses from Assignment 3 must be used to inform the content of Assignment 4. The change project described in Assignments 1 and 2 must be the project implemented for Assignment 4, however, it is understood that actualization of the project and project plan may include variations due to circumstances that arise during the project implementation. To complete Assignment 4, students are expected to use information and skill development included in this and previous courses in the BScN program.
This assignment is created and submitted in the form of an e-presentation video using Panopto software.
