Presentation of the brief

This should amount to a brief account of the topic question/area you have chosen, what has already been published on the topic chosen, the problem or issue discussed.  It should not be a mere descriptive list of the material available, and not a set of summaries. The review should demonstrate a critical analysis of a segment of a published body of knowledge on the topic.

The basic structure of the presentation should include: Introduction, content areas, and conclusion, based on the following structure:

Introduction

• Define the general topic, issue, or area of concern, providing context;
• Point out overall trends in what has been published about the topic;
• Point out conflicts or gaps in the literature; and
• Establish your reason for reviewing the literature and scope of literature.

Content part

• Group the literature according to common denominators, such as conclusions of authors, specific purposes or objectives, themes, etc;
• Summarise individual literature with as much or as little detail as each merits according to its comparative importance in the literature; and
• Provide key points in the literature at intermediate points in the review to aid in an understanding of the topic.

Conclusion part of literature review

• Summarise the major contributions in the literature, maintaining the focus established in your introduction; and
• Evaluate the current position of the law and commentary in the literature, pointing out any flaws or gaps or inconsistencies or lack of clarity in it, and the developments in the law and commentary.
