INTRODUCTION

The module will deal with three main interrelated clusters of ideas.
(i) The first set of ideas are related to the relationship between law and development as a school of thought and practice, and its evolution over the last decades. The “Law and Development” movement first emerged after the Second World War, as part of the surfacing of “development” at the time, as an assumingly novel language to manage the relationship between the still largely colonised Global South and the Global North. We will study the aspirations of the Law and Development movement, its evolution, and its connection to the complex idea of development. Through an examination of classic and contemporary texts., we will chart how assertions of the economic, and still cultural, superiority of Western societies and their law have uneasily accompanied the use of law for the achievement of development.

On successfully completing the module students will be able to:
1. Present relevant knowledge and understanding in the form of reasoned and supported argument through seminar discussion and coursework;
2. Develop and apply their knowledge and understanding in the form of reasoned supported argument through seminar discussion and assessment;
3. Carry out thorough research analysing various points of view and using wide sources.
