Description I was appointed as a student nurse in a trauma unit of a hospital during the second week of my training. While I was collecting information about some other patient, I noticed that the doctor was trying to convince the patient to remove the drainage tube which was connected to the abdomen of the patient. The patient refused this and the doctor left the room. Then I decided to convince the patient. Feelings I was feeling sad and disappointed because even after knowing the harm of the drainage tube the patient does not want to remove it. The doctor present there did not try to convince him about the long-term use of drainage and left the room. So, as a nurse, it becomes my responsibility to effectively communicate to the patient and make him aware of the side effects of long-term use of the drainage system. Evaluation The overall experience was not good for me. Effective or good communication by the nurse is a vital component and it helps to interact with the patient efficiently and understand their opinions, concerns, and experiences. Effective communication is not only done using verbal communication but also through non-verbal communication such as active listening. It also enhances the patient experience, reduces complaints, increases self-confidence, career prospects, job satisfaction, and reduces stress (Wang, 2018).
