You have been asked to design a digital communication system to communicate a signal with the following characteristics: An analogue signal source with a frequency range from 0Hz to 64kHz, a dynamic range of 72.24dB and a maximum voltage of 4.1V. Answer the following, stating any assumptions used and include full derivations and or calculations.

 

(a) For the Analogue to Digital Conversion (ADC) what is the maximum size of the quantisation interval in volts and minimum sampling frequency that would be needed?

 

(b) It is found that each quantisation level occurs with a probability that is a factor of 2-n where n is an integer. What technique could be used to make the digital representation more efficient and would be optimal for this particular data source? Why?

 

(c) If the step in (b) is not applied, determine the minimum data rate in bits per second that would be needed to communicate the signal after digitisation and in a serial form.

 

(d) What electronic component would be needed following the ADC to convert the signal to a serial form? What would be the minimum clock frequency for this component for this system?

 

(e) Following serialisation, a coding technique is applied to help the receiver identify whether an error occurs during transmission. Name and describe with the use of examples how such a technique can identify the location of an error in the received digital signal. Also, determine the effect on the redundancy of this additional coding technique.

 

(f) Determine the minimum theoretical bandwidth needed to communicate the signal for this system if the signal to noise ratio of the channel is 32dB.
