This word (inclusive of endnotes and references) research proposal will prepare you for your final essay. (Note, by shortening the length of the assignment, I have slightly modified the assignment terms outlined in the syllabus). You need to select and clearly identify a media phenomenon or advent and then how you plan to research its impact on industry practices, power concentration, resistance to power, or some other aspect of its significance and contribution to social political economy. Examples of media phenomenon or advent include the introduction of Facebook, the invention of television, the banning of free software sharing platforms such as BearShare and LimeWire, the introduction of NetFlix, the launching of a particular communications satellite, etc. Your proposal will lay the groundwork for you making an argument in your final paper. In your proposal you must indicate how you will develop an argument in relation to particular forms of analyses studied in the MACS 240 textbook Critical Political Economy of the Media.Your submission needs to be written in standard essay form (do not use bullet points, write in paragraph form only). Thus, when writing your proposal, structure it like an essay. Describe the position you plan to take in relation to the core course concept or theory you plan to write your final paper on later in the term. (See tips on formulating your position below). Further, all sources informing your analysis need to be from peer-reviewed scholarly works (Wikipedia is NOT a peer-reviewed source, however, academic journal articles are).

Critical Essay

The final essay is a words total which includes endnotes and a basic bibliography.The final essay is an extension of your essay proposal. Through a factually accurate well justified argument/analysis you need to draw (quote, paraphrase, summarize, cite) on the theorists and concepts covered in the course that help you to critically examine your media phenomenon or advent. Apart from a comprehensive description of the media phenomenon or advent you select, here are some questions your paper needs to directly address: what changes in industry/technology did it prompt?; what power relations did it build/alter/reduce/eliminate?; what corporate/government/social changes did it prompt?

Further, all sources informing your analysis need to be from peer-reviewed scholarly works (as per the Research Proposal Assignment, Wikipedia is NOT a peer-reviewed source, however, UFV Library academic journal articles are).
