Assignment Task

Introduction

In the tutorial sessions, we have developed a simplified MATLAB Simulink model of an electric vehicle, tested its performance throughout a drive cycle and analyzed the results. Now it is time to personalize the model, make adjustments, and incorporate enhancements.

Task

1. In the coursework resources there is excel spreadsheet with technical specifications of various modern electric vehicles. This data has been obtained from (can be used for further referencing).Students must use last 2 digits of their student number and match the number to the database available in the excel spreadsheet to identify the unique vehicle make, model and its parameters that the student will be working with. Once the vehicle technical details have been identified, the following tasks should be performed:

  • Adjust model parameters (such as motor rated power, battery capacity, vehicle mass, etc.) for the model to represent the student’s unique vehicle. Summarise in a table all the vehicle’s technical specifications that have been used to adjust the model.
  • As part of the vehicle range specifications, the database provides range values for WLTP drive cycle testing. Adjust the model to employ WLTP drive cycle and perform the simulation. How does the simulation result compare to the data provided? What could be the reason for the difference?
  • Analyse the model. Provide discussion on all the simplifications and assumptions employed.

2. There is custom real world drive cycle attached to the coursework resources, which consists not only of the velocity profile, but also synchronised road gradient data. Attempt the following tasks:

  • Change the model in a way, so that it accepts and uses road gradient profile along with the velocity profile (you might want to use something else instead of previously used “Drive cycle block”.
  • Simulate the vehicle throughout the drive cycle provided. How does road gradient affect vehicle range? Provide discussion.

3. You are free to use any vehicle parameters for this task, as well as any cycle you wish. However, the simulation set up must be clearly explained.  In certain cases, such as delivery vans, vehicle mass does not stay constant throughout the drive cycle. However, in our model we set it as a constant value. Attempt the following:

  • Think of a way to modify the model so that the vehicle mass becomes dynamic throughout the simulation.
  • Design an unloading/loading drive cycle scenario and perform simulations. Present the results and provide discussion on your findings.
