Promoting positive mental health

Having considered various aspects of mental health it is now time to think further about how to promote positive mental health. This is important for those who have never experienced a mental health problem as well as for those who have. Promoting positive mental health is a lifelong endeavour for all of us. We see then that we can promote our own mental health. Everyone is capable of doing that – the more it is encouraged the more mentally healthy we all will be.

It is important to consider the interventions that may be used to promote positive mental health, wherever we find ourselves in relation to our experience.

Key principles of health promotion

There are four core principles in health promotion (Naidoo & Wills, 2000). These include:

  • empowerment

  • equity

  • participation

  • collaboration

Empowerment

We visited empowerment and belonging in Module 3. According to Naidoo & Wills (2000), empowerment is the process through which people gain greater control over decisions and actions that affect their health. This can be done at an individual one-to-one level; for example, providing them with the information and skills to prevent or control a health issue. Empowerment can also occur at a group/community level. Community development approaches involve actively involving a community to challenge and change the world they live in.

Equity

Equity means fairness. There are inequities in the health status of different populations. Equity in health means re-addressing those inequalities and inequities and trying to redistribute material resources and power (Cottrell, Girvan & McKenzie, 2006).  This can involve advocating for greater social and economic equity as a means of promoting health. Other activities include providing equal access to services; for example, providing access to health care to people in rural areas.

Participation

Wherever possible, health promotion practitioners address health issues by doing things with people rather than doing things for them. The use of participatory approaches enables people to take greater control over the conditions affecting their health. This should happen at all stages of a health promotion initiative: designing it, planning it, as data gathering, analysis, implementation and evaluation (Naidoo & Wills, 2000). Participation in mental health promotion means including all the stakeholders.
