Assessment Range and Conditions:  This assessment is to be completed individually by students outside of scheduled class time. This is an open book assessment – students may refer to course materials and other sources of information to complete the assignment. Part 1 – Reflections

  1. Write a short description of your own social and cultural background:

    1. What name do you give to your own culture?

    2. What are some of the features of your culture?

    3. Compare Australian culture with another culture. How do you think that Australian attitudes, language, policies, and society impact on someone from that culture? (If you are from another culture you may write about how Australian culture impacts on you, or choose another culture if this makes you more comfortable.). 

 

  1. Write a short description of your own understanding of the definition and concept of diversity. (one paragraph)

  2. Write a short description of a time when you have felt uncomfortable due to interacting with someone from a background which is different to your own. Describe the situation, what happened, how it made you feel, what you assumed about the other person, and what you think they assumed about you. (Remember, there are no right or wrong answers, and your response will not be shared with anyone except for your assessor).

  3. If presented with this situation again, describe at least one way in which you could alter your communication with this person to make it less uncomfortable. (one paragraph)

  4. Australia is a socially and culturally diverse country. Identify why it is important for health workers to have an understanding of cultural awareness, cultural competence and cultural safety, and describe why each of these concepts are important for clients in a health care context
