Part 1 – Reflections
This section requires you to undertake a structured process to reflect on your own perspectives of diversity, and demonstrate understanding of concepts of diversity as they apply to your work role.
Part 2 – Underpinning knowledge
This section requires you to provide answers to a series of questions requiring you to demonstrate that you understand the underpinning principles of working with diverse people.
Part 3 – Case scenarios
This section requires you to provide responses to case scenarios where communication difficulties and challenges are present. Your responses should demonstrate that you are able to form appropriate responses to situations which are challenging, and apply the underpinning knowledge about working with diverse people and establishing and managing client relationships to realistic workplace scenarios.
This assessment covers the following topics:
Reflecting on own perspectives of diversity
Knowledge of Australian, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures
Knowledge of diversity in Australia
Legal and ethical considerations for working with diverse people
Key areas of diversity and their characteristics
Potential needs of marginalised groups
Communicating with people from diverse backgrounds and situations
Promoting understanding and resolving misunderstanding
Identifying and responding to client needs
Responding to barriers to communication, and difficult or challenging behaviour
Assessment Range and Conditions: This assessment is to be completed individually by students outside of scheduled class time. This is an open book assessment – students may refer to course materials and other sources of information to complete the assignment. Where information is used from another source it must be referenced correctly using
Part 1 – Reflections
Write a short description of your own social and cultural background:
What name do you give to your own culture?
What are some of the features of your culture?
Compare Australian culture with another culture. How do you think that Australian attitudes, language, policies, and society impact on someone from that culture? (If you are from another culture you may write about how Australian culture impacts on you, or choose another culture if this makes you more comfortable.).
Write a short description of your own understanding of the definition and concept of diversity. (one paragraph)
Write a short description of a time when you have felt uncomfortable due to interacting with someone from a background which is different to your own. Describe the situation, what happened, how it made you feel, what you assumed about the other person, and what you think they assumed about you. (Remember, there are no right or wrong answers, and your response will not be shared with anyone except for your assessor).
If presented with this situation again, describe at least one way in which you could alter your communication with this person to make it less uncomfortable. (one paragraph)
