Back in the 1980’s, when the technology we now take for granted was in its infant stage, two entrepreneurial friends recognised they could capitalise on this technological “big bang” and seized their opportunity to become a part of this burgeoning industry in Australia.

James Ford and Leon Thompson were studying science together at university in 1987, when the new mobile phone technology hit Australia. Both students were captivated by the potential of such technological advancements, so in their spare time began researching and tinkering with any phones that they could lay their hands on. At that time, Australia had just introduced their new mobile phone network, but the manufacturing industry had not yet evolved to be able to produce a local version of the “cell phone” that could utilise the network. This meant that Australian users relied upon imported phones to access the newly introduced network to communicate with other devices.

James and Leon tried to keep ahead of the growth in their business by borrowing heavily from their bank, employing more staff and introducing new models of phones, however they seemed to be at the mercy of circumstances, rather than being able to take a proactive and controlled approach. Consequently, the boys were constantly playing catch up. They had good ideas in response to the changes in their industry and implemented them, however there appeared to be no strategic plan in place for the long- term.

Whilst the sales for all models of the SliFone and their accessories continued to grow, so also did the warranty costs associated with the products. Leon, it seemed, could deliver the best design for the Australian market, but struggled to deliver reliability. There were problems with the car chargers and the phones themselves, which resulted in increasing numbers of returns and warranty claims. James was beginning to receive worrying feedback from the telco customers as well as the end users of their products, which was impacting their reputation in the marketplace. The boys needed to address these problems before the future of Foleo was irrevocably impacted.
