Management Assignment Help

Case Study: Case Study Ford Motor Co. Managing Change in project management can be difficult because there is often a resistance in this change, within an individual and a company’s culture. To combat this a Project Manager needs to follow a change process to ensure the project does not fail. Change management has clear steps that can be followed. These include:
  1. Prepare for the Change
  2. Plan for the Change
  3. Manage the Change
  4. Reinforce and Sustain the Change.
(Wanner, 2013) The Ford Motor Co. implemented a number of changes to assist in communication within the Electrical/Electronic Systems Engineering Department ensuring it becomes consistent, focused and simple.  Three changes were identified:
  • Implementing a Project Management office in the Electrical/Electronic Systems Engineering Department
  • Professional project managers consulted on the implementation and maintenance of the Project management office.
  • Internalising project management as a discipline and providing training to the entire organization.
The changes that did occur stemmed from the implementation of a Project Management office in the Electrical/Electronic Systems Engineering Department. Due to this the department was able to set processes in place to improve and streamline work and ensured a decrease in errors across the department. The Electrical/Electronic Systems Engineering department managed its own governance which enable it to make quick and informed decisions about the projects being managed in that department. It was also able to control the assignment of resources and staff to the most appropriate projects to ensure it was suited to there skill set improving productivity.  The Electrical/Electronic Systems Engineering Department managed resistance well. Managers expected 100% compliance and each functional management chain were able to address and resolve variance causing resistance within the project management office. The leaders were able to approach this as continuous improvement and include staff in the process allowing for improved compliance.  According to the Project management Institute (PMI, 2013) the project life cycle is phases a project must pass from its start to its finish and provides a framework for managing the project not specific to the work involved. Ford Motor Co. uses a Standard Life Cycle approach to manage their projects. With the implementation of the Project Management Office the professional project managers prepare the project. The scope is outlined against the requirements, timeline and resources required for the project. The change process is done formally beginning at the monthly stakeholder meeting. The governance board then reviews the proposed changes to give a positive or negative response to the proposes. Resources are then aligned to meet with the approved changes.  This process is outlined in the Electrical/Electronic Systems Engineering Department Project Management structure. This is composed of 3 levels including
  • Governance board of Executive directors and engineering chiefs
  • Stakeholders including members of departments
  • Professional Project Managers.
Early in the change process it was identified that understanding of the objectives delayed alignment of the project management offices values but with this understanding and clear communication the objectives were understood and implemented. Continuously reviewing and developing their process was able to ensure appropriate objectives, scope and resource allocation was implemented. Task: 1 Change requirement and Project life cycle To begin Assessment 1 Part A, students will be given a scenario based on approved project. They will identify change requirements of the project and critically analyse how the requirements introduce changes to the project management plan, process groups and lifecycle of the project. Students are encouraged to analyse the case and share personalthoughts with group members in the class, and actively seek feedback and inputs from facilitators.
