Main task: 3500-word essay - You are required to identify articles from the 10 selected academic journals above as sufficient for a 3500-word essay. You will then present a critical literature review in which you examine keys issues, debates, research, theories highlighted in the selected articles. In your analysis, you should aim to compare and contrast between content in the publications. In doing so, you will be required to identify the different perspectives, positions and main arguments of the articles. In the process, you will consider highlighting similarities and differences in the arguments developed, evaluate the value and contribution of the articles as well as examine the suitability of the theories, research methods, and sources of reference included by the author(s). Other aspects of the critical review should include the currency of issues/sources considered, depth/scope of exploration clarity, etc. Further, examine wider limitations, strengths, weaknesses, contribution, the implication for theory and practice, etc. etc. Expectation General

  • Select the right articles from one topic from the recommended journals.
  • Examine the key debates from slides and reading from other articles and books.
  • Limit yourself to 10 articles that will form the basis of the actual review

  • Avoid summarising each of the articles and presenting as a composite review. Rather the review should consistently interweave debates, issues and compare different viewpoints, research findings, methods, content, etc.
  • The review should engage with the key themes/issues underpinning the topic of focus.
  • The review should examine the topic as a whole, considering strengths, limitations and unexplored possibilities that could contribute new knowledge.
  • The review should note, methodological/philosophical approaches and their implication for the adopted perspectives and points of view.
Expectation: Academic discipline
  • Your review must be structured into specific sections/parts/sub-headings.
  • Each section will constitute subsections which all focus on a particular issue.
  • Avoid rumbling and babbling. Cover one issue or sub-topic at different places/paragraphs/section of your essay.
  • Think of your essay as separate shopping baskets with oranges to one side, meat to one side, vegetable to one plastic bag and so on.
  • Be clear about what you are exploring in every section of your essay.
  • You are allowed to use sub-headings
  • Avoid using the 1st person, ‘I’ think; in ‘my’ opinion, I strongly believe, etc.
  • Take the independent position of the reviewer, express yourself as: it is clear from the review/analysis/comparison that…., Comparing the views of X and Y, it is evident that…..what these two perspectives suggest is that…….It could be argued that.
