Assignment Task: The origin and nature of soil carbon This module examines processes responsible for the accumulation and consumption of soil carbon under various management regimes. The diverse forms of soil carbon are considered and their functions in soil will be identified. Much of the world’s carbon is stored in soils as organic matter and there is an important interchange between soil carbon and atmospheric carbon dioxide. Indeed there are proposals to sequester increased amounts of carbon in soils to mitigate against “global warming” and attract “carbon credits”. To achieve this we need to understand how different land management regimes impact on soil carbon storage and if interventions such as the use of biochar, green manures, etc. have a significant role in this process. Students will be assessed on the basis of a technical report [20 page maximum including figures/tables] compiled from the field- and laboratory data and the literature. Topics to be addressed in the report should include: THIS module is worth 35% of the total unit mark. Part A

1. Describe the chemical and physical nature of carbon in soil [only make brief reference to carbonates] [10%]
2. Describe the processes that create and consume organic carbon [including charcoal] in soil. Make sure you address microbial processes. [10 %]
3. Describe the global distribution of carbon in soils explaining the relationships between pedological processes/conditions and the dynamics of soil carbon. [15 %]
4. Describe how changes in land management [reduced/zero tillage, reforestation, etc] and possible climate change will affect the amounts and forms of carbon in soil. Try to estimate the dynamics/rates of changes in soil carbon induced by changes in management and climate. [15 %]

Part B Provide a short lab report including methods and data for the laboratory work.

1. Provide a short overview and explain the used methods in their general principal, give references. [10 %]
2. Present the data in tables and graphs so it helps your discussion in point 4 [10 %]
3. Estimate the total carbon content for each of the layers for the 3 different sites [10 %]
4. Give a brief discussion on the success of the 2 different remediated mine sites comparing to the native forest. [20 %]
