Skills in Systematically Surveying - Literature Review Writing Assessment Answer

Assignment Task: Aim To develop skills in systematically surveying and reading into a particular area or topic of research interest relevant to your professional discipline. The specific objective of this assignment is to make a critical assessment of the state of the existing knowledge in that area and to identify a particular ‘gap’, or unanswered question, that could indicate where further research is needed. Tasks
  1. Write another project abstract and title summarising the anticipated focus, aims, approach and outcomes of a research project that you could (hypothetically)* undertake and complete between now and the end of semester 2. *(NOTE: students who will be undertaking an actual research Dissertation next semester should use this opportunity to develop your preliminary research proposal.)
  2. Make a methodical and thorough survey of literature and design precedents (i.e. designed/planned or built work) relevant to your chosen research topic. Be sure to explore a range of possible different literatures pertinent to the research focus/content as well as relevant research methods. This should include any prescribed readings and precedents that your tutor may assign.
  3. Prepare a preliminary literature review that will identify, categorise, and critically assess at least 10key publications (e.g., journal articles, book chapters, government publications, research reports)of significance for your research topic. These must be carefully selected for their critical substance and quality. While the initial progress submission (2a) may be in the format of individual annotated bibliographic entries, the final submission (2b) will be a critical review of the literature surveyed short essay form that assesses the state of existing knowledge in the area of research interest.
  4. Identify and critically analyse at least 3 design precedents, historical or contemporary, of clear relevance to your research topic, typology or approach. (NOTE: MArch, MLArch and MPlanning/Urban Design students are welcome and expected to employ graphic analyses as well as text in their discussion of these design precedents).
  5. Describe a ‘gap’ in the literature surveyed, and propose a concise, preliminary ‘research question’ that could be the basis of further research.
