1.1 Week 1: Introduction
The general educational aims of this course are:
? To introduce students to the process of technology planning and strategic technology management, particularly the integration of technology strategy with business strategy in the context of engineering and technological organisations.

? To introduce the operational aspects of managing technology including the relationships with production, marketing, R&D, and human resources activities, and to provide a framework for understanding current technology management issues.

The syllabus will introduce students to an analytical structure through which decision-making will help to shape and accomplish the strategic and operational objectives of an organisation concerned with developing and/or utilising technology. It will provide an integrated view of the full impact of technology by effectively linking engineering, science, business and management disciplines, and develop, through case study analysis and selected readings, new insights leading to more effective decision-making in the practice of integrating technology strategy with business strategy in a technology-based organisation.

On completion of the course, students should be able to:
1. Effectively apply their engineering knowledge and skills to integrate technology strategy with business strategy in an organisation, from the basic research stage through to implementation and transfer in industry.
2. Reduce time and effort in development programs, appraise risk and uncertainty more realistically, and address discrepancies between operational conventions and strategic goals.
3. Assist decision-making about continued use of existing technology, introduction or development of new technology, and the commercialisation of technology.
4. Offer guidance for selling the role of technology to top management and for evaluating performance of technical operations.
